I started off by playing around with the settings in the photo editor feature from Procreate. After that, I got to work on the font. I will insert a time lapse of that here.

Following a tutorial with my tutor, I realised that my design is too simple. I wanted to make sure that it's clear that it's meant to be a t shirt design and not just a simplistic movie poster. So, I tried to incorporate some of the most important motifs in the movie.

I drew out a candle, that can be interpreted in a few different ways:

  • the process of passing the fire from one person's candle to another symbolises the passing of knowledge onto others, an important theme in the movie

  • the students in the movie use candles to be able to see in the cave pointed out by their teacher, where they read poems to each other, which represents a place where they can let their creativity roam and they can break free from the authoritarian atmosphere of their school.

  • the simple act of carrying a candle can represent taking control of their own lives and "seizing the day" (carpe diem- a phrase used by the teacher to inspire his students)

I also took inspiration from Neil's crown. This is definitely an establishing shot in the film. Just before taking his own life, Neil places Puck's crown on his head, creating an image similar to Jesus Christ with the crown of thorns on his head, a representation of Neil as a kind of martyr.

Here is a time lapse of me drawing those elements.

After that, I started working on the actual design. I made a few variants, placing all the elements in different positions.
